According to the US Department of Commerce, construction companies and contractors have the highest failure rate of any other business. Up to 96% of these companies fail before reaching 10 years in operation. Added to this, many of the more established and well-known Minnesota contractors are selling out their companies to outside private equity firms. This has pulled the rug out from many of those employed by such companies as they are having to suddenly acclimate to the whims of a corporate entity. It also does not bode well when big national firms on the coasts are invested in profits and not the people across the table.
There is another massive problem facing our industry: storm damage has been at record highs the last five years in Minnesota, and it does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Insurance companies have been losing money year-over-year on homeowners claims for this reason. In 2024, homeowners are increasingly experiencing a rude awakening: their premiums are going up while vital coverages are being removed. Now instead of carriers fixing damages for the cost of a deductible, they are shifting much of that burden onto their customers.
As hail and wind continues to hammer our state, contractors are finding it increasingly difficult to secure approvals using their typical methods of argument with the insurance carriers. In short, it is becoming an uphill battle to secure approvals that were once routinely achieved.
